Saw Mill Students Learn Important Fire Safety
The students learned important lessons from the fire department as part of Fire Prevention Month.
Life-saving information was shared with students at Saw Mill Road Elementary School by members of the community who happen to be trained in saving lives.
Volunteers from the North Bellmore Fire Department visited the school on Oct. 22 and 23 for Fire Prevention Month. Students in kindergarten through third grade were invited inside the fire safety trailer, which is set up like a small house. In the first room, students listened as firefighters reviewed kitchen safety, the importance of having working smoke detectors and stop, drop and roll. Students then moved on to the bedroom, which began to fill up with fake smoke.
Firefighters stressed to children the importance of knowing two ways out of their homes in the event of a fire. When they couldn’t leave through the door, they went out the window and were led to safety by waiting firefighters. After their visit, students received fire safety coloring books from the fire department.
