Snow Emergency: Residents Urged to Remove Cars from Roadways

Removing cars from streets allows snowplows and salters to work 'effectively and efficiently.'

Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced that she has declared a snow emergency in response to potentially dangerous conditions associated with a major winter snowstorm.

"Our town is continuing its proactive practice of having deployed salt spreaders on the road at the first sign of snow, said Murray.

"More than 200 pieces of equipment are utilized in the salt spreading and road plowing operation."

Pursuant to Chapter 174 of the Town of Hempstead Code, Supervisor Murray has requested that residents remove cars from local roadways.

"In storms with significant snowfall and limited visibility, it is particularly important that cars are not parked on the roads," said the Supervisor. "Snow plows can perform more effectively and efficiently when cars are not on the roads."

Additionally, Murray urged residents to limit use of motor vehicles to necessary travel. "Roadways can be slippery and heavy snowfall can limit visibility," observed Murray.

"By minimizing vehicular traffic, roads can be cleared more quickly and residents can minimize the risks associated with driving in storm conditions."

Finally, the Supervisor advised that residents who shovel driveways should place snow to the right of their driveway when facing the road. By doing so, residents can reduce the effect of having their driveways being "plowed-in" with snow after shoveling.
