Sound Off: Fleet Week Cancelled in NYC

Fleet Week, which was scheduled to come to New York City from May 23-30, has been cancelled due to Sequester Budget Cuts, according to CBS New York.

Fleet Week is a United States Navy, United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard tradition in which active military ships recently deployed in overseas operations dock in a variety of major cities for one week.

The event, which The Gothamist says usually generates about $20 million in revenue for the City, has been coming to Manhattan for the past 26 years.

"Unfortunately, there will be no Navy ships in New York this year for Fleet Week and no additional Sailors or Marines," Beth Baker, the director of public affairs for Fleet Week New York, said on their website. "We look forward to the opportunity to participate in future Fleet Weeks and we greatly appreciate the city's patience and understanding during these unusual times."

"Thank you NYC for what you do for our service men and women each and every day," Baker added. "Hope to see you next year!"
