Town of Hempstead Notebook: Animal Shelter News
A weekly look-in at news in the Town of Hempstead.
- All 16 animals that were rescued from a Rockville Centre "house of horrors" on Jan. 14 have been successfully adopted. Animals rescued from the house included six chihuahuas, three dachshunds, a Yorkshire terrier, an English Bulldog, a Shih Tzu, a Boxer and two cats. While the 16 animals that survived were adopted, there were also 26 dead animals that were found in the same home. It was initially reported that there were 24 dead, but two more carcasses were found, bringing the total to 26.
- Dozens of protesters gathered outside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh on Feb. 5 to express their discontent with what they're calling the shelter's "fat cats," nine staff that reportedly earned six figure salaries, a ban against volunteers, and alleged mistreatment of the animals. They have brought their complaints before Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the board in the past, and have now launched a letter writing campaign to demand a state audit. The Town issued a response to the protest, stating that some of the activists are exploiting the issue to promote their own political agendas and have hurled "baseless and mean-spirited allegations against one of the finest animal shelters anywhere." - Over 1,400 youngsters graduated with honors from last summer's Town of Hempstead Lacrosse Academy. The academy offers expert instruction on lacrosse fundamentals and strategies. This year the lacrosse academy has lowered the eligibility age to 6, with an age limit of 15. Weekly clinics begin on Monday, June 20 and continue through Aug. 4. Clinics run from Monday to Thursday each week, with the the Oceanside Park clinic meeting from Tuesday to Friday. This year the lacrosse academy will present six weekly clinics, three during the day and three at night, and will also introduce a new All Star Position Clinic for older youngsters, ages 10 to 15, featuring intensive instruction for players with at least three years of experience.
Clinics are open to Town of Hempstead youngsters only, with a registration fee of $60 per student and a discount rate of $45 for additional family members. All payments must be made in the form of check or money order payable to the Town of Hempstead. If openings remain, registrations will be accepted at the scheduled park prior to the first session of each clinic.
