Town of Hempstead Notebook: Cell Tower Rejection and Multiple Cases of Animal Cruelty

A weekly look-in at news in the Town of Hempstead.

  • The Town of Hempstead Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) has denied a T-Mobile Northeast application to place cell phone antennas atop the roof of Subway, located at 3 Nassau Boulevard, at the corner of Cambridge Avenue in Garden City South. The board cited that the applicant "lacked adequate evidence that a gap in cell service existed."
  • On Jan. 25, the Town of Hempstead Board voted unanimously to amend Chapter 202 of the Town’s code to include rules and regulations that will limit parking and change traffic stops. The amended regulations will effect Bellmore, Merrick, West Hempstead, Malverne, Lakeview, Wantagh, Seaford, East Meadow, Oceanside and Valley Stream.
  • Hempstead Town Animal Control Officers saved 17 severely neglected dogs from a Rockville Centre home on the afternoon of Jan. 12. Two weeks after being rescued from the home, a pregnant dog that was among the group of canine refugees delivered four puppies with the assistance of Dr. Dominic Marino of Long Island Veterinary Specialists and Animal Emergency and Critical Care Center in Plainview. Mama, the proud new mother, was transported by the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter staff to Long Island Veterinary Specialists in the wake of the rescue, and Marino offered his services to care for the pregnant animal and help deliver her puppies.
  • On Jan. 14, 16 abused and neglected animals were rescued from another Rockville Centre home by the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter, with 24 dead animals also found in the house. For the past week, the shelter staff have nursed them back to health. Now that the Town of Hempstead has legally gained ownership of the pets, they are ready to be adopted. “Thanks to the caring shelter workers, the animals are ready to begin a new life in a loving home,” Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray said. “Anyone interested in adopting these wonderful pets can call the Animal Shelter at (516) 785-5220.”
  • Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray is inviting couples to wed on the most romantic day of the year, Valentine's Day. In addition, the Supervisor welcomes married couples to renew their vows on cupid's special day. Newlyweds will enjoy a beautiful ceremony in the town's historic courtroom and a special reception. "I am encouraging couples who are planning their nuptials to schedule their ceremony for Feb. 14," Murray said. "Why not exchange wedding vows in our historic and charming courtroom under a festive arch of pink, white and red balloons?" Couples must secure a marriage license at least 24 hours in advance and make advance reservations to participate in the Valentine's Day ceremonies. Please call the Town Clerk's Office at 516-812-3019 for more information.
