4 Brentwood Students Named National Hispanic Scholars
Brentwood Students Recognized by The College Board's National Hispanic Recognition Program

Brentwood, N.Y. (March 2019)—Four of Brentwood Union Free School District’s high school students—Josiah Sarceno, Kelly Campos, Marc Fernandez, Angel Alvarado—were recently selected as National Hispanic Scholars for scoring among the top 2.5 percent of Hispanic and Latino test-takers on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Their scores ranged from the high 1300’s to the high 1400’s.
“We are tremendously proud of these four notable students who have been role models for their peers,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, Superintendent of Schools. “At the Brentwood Union Free School District, we celebrate our diverse student body every day. Achievements, both collective and individual, provide an opportunity to reflect on where we have been and open doors to where we will go in the future.”
The College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) is an initiative to identify academically exceptional Hispanic/Latino students during the college acceptance process. Students eligible for this honor must take the PSAT/NMSQT during October of their junior year, are at least 25 percent Hispanic/Latino, achieve the minimum required PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index score (varies by geographic location), and earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year. Each year, the NHRP awards approximately 7,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the exam.
