
BRENTWOOD, NY - Brentwood High School senior Ahmad Perez was named a finalist in the Regeneron Science Talent Search on Wednesday.
Perez was among a total of five Long Island students finalists. In total, 40 students were selected from 300 semifinalists, known as Scholars, who were selected from more than 2,000 entrants from across the country.

Perez’s project, “What is Happening to Long Island Salt Marshes,” focuses on the effects of global warming on the Timber Point Salt Marshes in Great River, and Crab Meadow in Northport.
The project also presented a method for restoration.

The finalists will travel to Washington, DC in March, where they will compete before a panel of judges for more than $1.8 million in additional awards, including the top prize of $250,000.
After he was named a semifinalist, Perez was honored by local Town of Islip officials.
"The Town Board and I were delighted to recognize Ahmad as a semifinalist, and extend our well wishes as he advanced in the competition," Supervisor Angie Carpenter said. "Ahmad’s accomplishment is ground-breaking for Brentwood High School, and it is a testament to the collaboration between the administrators and educators, and the district’s investment in classroom resources."
