Brentwood’s Big Crunch
Brentwood Union Free School District's Elementary Schools Pledge to Eat Healthy, and Locally

Brentwood, New York (October 2018)—The Brentwood Union Free School District’s (BUFSD) Twin Pines Elementary School and Pine Park Elementary School celebrated the Big Apple Crunch 2018, an event to encourage schools throughout New York to promote awareness about the significance of food education. Faculty and students from both buildings congregated on the schools’ shared field with an abundance of fresh and shiny apples that were grown locally in Suffolk County.
“Brentwood’s Big Apple Crunch is a great opportunity to inform students of the locally grown produce and it’s benefits for the environment,” said BUFSD Superintendent of Schools Mr. Richard Loeschner. “The district’s faculty and teachers look to incorporate engaging lesson plans that instill a passion for learning in our students.”
In similar fashion to thousands of students and faculty throughout the state, BUFSD’s students and faculty bit into freshly ripe apples at lunch time, in support of New York’s local farms and farmers. In classrooms, students have been learning about different initiatives for healthier eating, proper nutrition and the science behind growing produce. At the conclusion of Big Apple Crunch 2018, students and faculty pledged to eat healthy and planned to eat locally as much as possible in the future.

Each year, Big Apple Crunch Day hosts a competition for districts state-wide for an opportunity to win a $1,000 scholarship for a FarmOn! Victory Garden. This year, students from Twin Pines Elementary School and Pine Park Elementary School stood shoulder-to-shoulder to strategically assemble themselves into the outline of an apple, with a “B” inside for Brentwood.
The FarmOn! Foundation’s goal, in partnership with local farmer’s state-wide, is to educate children about farming and the benefits of eating healthy.
