
Brentwood, N.Y. (October 2019)—The Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) is thrilled to announce an exceptional student, Angel Alvarado, has been recognized as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Selected for his high scores on a standardized exam taken the year prior, Angel will now compete among 16,000 students in the nation for one of 7,500 National Merit scholarships valued at more than $32 million.
“On behalf of the district, I would like to congratulate Angel on this momentous accomplishment and recognize him for his dedication to his studies,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, Superintendent of Brentwood Union Free School District. “We are extremely proud of the continued academic excellence our students and teachers continue to demonstrate on a national level.”
Students qualifying for the competition must 1) be enrolled in a high school within the U.S. or submit citizen documentation for high schools outside the states, 2) submit standardized test scores from Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), and 3) intend to accept admission to college no later than the fall following completion of high school.

Established in 1955, the National Merit Scholarship Program is a not-for-profit organization that aims to provide academically talented high school students in the United States with scholastic opportunities. Valued at nearly $1.7 billion, the National Merit Scholarship Committee has allocated over 423,000 scholarships to more than three million students in the United States.
