Elderly Woman, Dog Rescued From Long Island House Fire

Hero officers knew the woman, 84, was in the home and they broke down the door to save her and her dog, carrying them both out, police say.

CENTRAL ISLIP, NY — An elderly Central Islip woman and her dog were saved from her burning home Saturday by hero officers who broke down the door to rescue her, police said.

According to Suffolk County Police, the incident took place on Rossmore Avenue at 3:20 p.m. Third Precinct Officers Sergio Rivera and John Votta responded to a 911 call and saw smoke coming from the attic of the home. Officers Rivera and Votta knew an elderly woman was living in the house and was unaccounted for, so they broke down the door, police said.

The 84-year-old woman was found on the first floor of the home, unaware that the second floor and attic were fully engulfed in flames, police said. The officers carried the woman and her Chihuahua out of the residence; she was evaluated on the scene but was not injured, police said.

Suffolk County Police arson section officers and the Central Islip Fire Department responded to the scene; the cause of the fire is under investigation, police said.
