A Brentwood man was sentenced to 22 years in prison, after pleading guilty in the 2019 stabbing of his mother, the DA says.
BRENTWOOD, NY — A Brentwood man who pleaded guilty to the 2019 stabbing of his mother was sentenced to 22 years in prison Tuesday in Central Islip, the Suffolk District Attorney's office said.
Akcel Arriaza, 22, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in the murder of Dora Villatoro Arriaza, 46, on Nov. 23, the DA said. He agreed to a sentence of 22 years in prison plus five years of post-release supervision, before Suffolk County Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz, the DA said.
According to prosecutors, Arriaza lured his mother outside their Adams Avenue home on December 8, 2019, and repeatedly stabbed his mother in the head and body.

“This defendant callously took the life of the very person who gave him life and destroyed his own family in the process,” Suffolk District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said. “With this sentence, this defendant has been brought to justice and hopefully the family and surrounding community can feel some closure over this senseless crime.”
Villatoro Arriaza was in the process of a divorce, prosecutors said, and the family continued to live in the same house, with escalating tension.
