Brentwood's Media Students Break Down Misconceptions and Stereotypes with PBS News Hour's Student Reporting Labs

Brentwood, N.Y. (October 2019)—Throughout this month, Brentwood’s media students will be using their voices and engaging with the community to break down the narratives around stereotypes and misconceptions for the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) NewsHour’s Student Reporting Labs.

“This year my Media Communications/Broadcast TV students have been given the opportunity to team up with PBS News Hour. With this partnership, our Brentwood students are able to share their stories and discuss a time when their peers felt misunderstood, labeled or stereotyped on a vast national stage,” said Mr. Sequoyah Wharton, Media Communications/Broadcast TV and Visual Arts Educator at Brentwood High School. “This important task not only allows students to understand stereotyping and each other’s experiences, but to take on the challenge to help change the narrative in our community. I’m so proud of how hard they all are working and look forward to share their finished products!”

Sporting new Student Reporting Labs swag, students in Mr. Wharton’s classes will utilize the building’s new Canon camera generously donated by PBS NewsHour to conduct interviews with their peers. Each interview will discuss a time when students in the building felt misunderstood, labeled or stereotyped. Students will then capture raw footage to be distilled into small video segments and short clips and featured on social media and the PBS NewsHour nightly broadcasts.

Through video journalism, Student Reporting Labs (SRL) encourages youth to find their voice and engage with their communities for transformative educational experiences. By connecting students with a network of public broadcasting mentors, the project-based learning program provides students with opportunities in story pitching, scriptwriting, narration, rough cuts and final videos.
