Students from Brentwood Freshman Center Explore College Opportunities During Overnight College Tour

Brentwood, NY (April 2019)—Brentwood Union Free School District’s Brentwood Freshman Center recently provided its students with a look into undergraduate life during an overnight college tour to better acquaint themselves with the college atmosphere. Coordinated by guidance counselors Antoinette Shervington, Agostinho Fernandes and Lori Legler, the trip spanned travel to five colleges over two days. More than 100 Brentwood freshman students explored the University at Albany, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Schenectady Community College, Marist College, and The College of Mount St. Mary’s.

“The District wants students to know what their education is preparing them for. Whether they choose to go to college or not, it’s important that these kids are able to develop a sense of direction for their future,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, superintendent of the Brentwood Union Free School District. “By providing them with the opportunity to visit different college campuses, the District is helping students better understand what it is they want to do and where they want to be after high school. Our aim is to produce upstanding, self-sufficient citizens of society by heading a number of initiatives to achieve this.”
Students were accompanied on the trip by their three guidance counselors and several 2019 College Ambassador Chaperones. Brentwood Freshman Center Principal Mr. Vincent Autera, drove upstate to surprise students and join the tour. During their down time at the Albany Ramada Plaza, travelers kept busy by playing various games including a few rounds of UNO in which Principal Autera joined in. Students were also treated to an evening of “Pizza & Poetry”, by the infamous performers of “Poetic VisionZ”.
