Students Dive into a New Course Option at Brentwood
BUFSD Offers New Lifeguard Course for High School Students

Brentwood, N.Y. (March 2020)—Students at Brentwood High School (BHS) are making new waves of accomplishments this school year. For the first time, Brentwood Union Free School District now offers Physical Education Lifeguarding as a course for high school students.
The district’s lifeguarding course—taught by Ms. Folz and Ms. Goumba—provides Brentwood’s high school students with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. More than 40 BHS students will complete the course as Red Cross CPR/AED certified lifeguards.
Brentwood’s Physical Education Lifeguarding course requires participants to be proficient swimmers, 15 years old or older by the completion date of the course, pass two written exams with 80% or better, pass a practical exam for lifeguard in water skills and CPR/AED skills test, and have 100% attendance.
