2nd Annual Karissa J. Kumpan Memorial Walk
Eastchester Remembers Local Woman, EHS Grad
A crisp blue September sky overhead, over one hundred and fifty local residents gathered at Eastchester High School on Saturday morning to remember Karissa Kumpan, a local woman who died in a tragic automobile accident in 2010.
The event raised funds for a scholarship in Karissa's name. According to event organizer Joan Postiglione, last year alone the community donated over $15,000, which resulted in two scholarships to students who best embodied Karissa's accomplishments - she was a talented gymnast, cheerleader, and lifeguard.
Despite the sad event leading to this, the second annual walk, the mood among participants was upbeat and reflective. Walkers came from all age ranges, with a strong turnout from the Eastchester High School community. They hugged, smiled, and laughed while circling the EHS track, dressed in light blue t-shirts bearing Karissa's name and a pair of angel wings.
