Sunday morning worship service at First Baptist Church of White Plains on the first Sunday of Lent

AS LENT BEGINS, Pastor Tim Dalton will reflect on the mysterious pieces and fragments of God’s grace and mercy—ultimately leading to God’s wholeness and boundless love and sacrifice in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. This Sunday, the congregation will examine the baptism of Jesus.

The Greek word for baptism is “baptizo,” which means either to “dip” or “submerge.” When someone is baptized, in the Baptist tradition, they go all the way in, under the water and come back out drenched. This brings to mind an image of Jesus coming up out of the River Jordan sopping wet from head to toe.

It’s a powerful symbol of his commitment to the kingdom of heaven and our part in it, even if we don’t always take Jesus up on his offer to go all in. It’s a radical call and Jesus is looking for partners willing to be transforming agents in the world. Are you ready to go “all in”?
