Description: Christian Dengler will convey how the continuities and discontinuities of different concepts of modernism have shaped the unique urbanism and architecture of Berlin. Its urban space can be seen as a spatial illustration of Robert Musil’s modern notion of “man without qualities:” a space constantly changing and adapting to new conditions. The architectural narration of Berlin’s manifold modernisms begins with the classicist Schinkel, moves from Gropius to Hitler’s architect Speer, and is nowadays re-connecting to its once utopian program.
