Obituary - Florence Steen

Florence Rollins Steen passed peacefully at the Atria Senior Living Residence in Stamford, Connecticut on November
30, 2012. The daughter of Glendora and Harry Rollins, Florence was born in Des Moines, Iowa September 17, 1922. At the age of 15 she moved with her family to La
Jolla, California, attended the Bishop School and graduated from Andrebrook (Tarrytown, NY), and proceeded to study at Vassar College and then Stanford University where she graduated with honors. She married attorney Melvin C. Steen, a founding partner of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton. Florence actively supported and held numerous leadership positions in First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bronxville, NY. She always held love at the center of every decision. Through her Church leadership and unselfish
kindness and generosity she had a loving and profound impact on the people she touched. Florence was an avid gardener, loving flowers and flower arranging, and gained a wealth of knowledge in the identification of trees and
flowers, at one point serving to identify and mark the major trees of Bronxville. She was active throughout her life in her Bronxville and Scarsdale communities
in activities ranging from being a founding member of the Boulder Ledge Garden Club and member of the Bronxville Junior League and of their Song-Pipers chorus.
Florence is still with many of us today including her sister Glendora Trescher of Haverford, PA and Dallas, children Deborah (Stonington, CT), Erick (Greenwich, CT), Gordon (Baltimore, MD), and Leslie (Washington, DC),  and grandchildren Augusta, Harry, Nathaniel and Portia.  Florence’s family wishes to extend their gratitude for the loving support of her many friends from across
the world, as well the closer to home and the staff at Atria.  Persons wishing to make donations in her name
may give to The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, the ASPCA, or to a charity of their choosing.
