A Way to Run Windows Programs on Linux

In this article, Pc Doctor NY discusses a way to avoid downtime when using Windows computers.

Do we really need Windows? The answer is no or maybe. With the recent advances in computer science and with the rise of virtualization, users have more options in terms of software to run and their portability. Every time we buy a computer, it comes bundled with a lot of software that most of the time we never use. What most of the users need on a computer are productivity tools such as Office. Office and its major applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook run by default as OEM software every time a new computer is purchased. The problem, however, arises when users' machines running Windows get infected and lose their data. A smart way to bypass this issue is to install a Linux OS and then run windows programs within Linux using emulators. If users want to run this project, here is the way they can do it.

First of all, save all your data and files into an external hard drive: the files will be required when the new system is ready for use. Go then to the Ubuntu website and download the Ubuntu desktop OS (64 bit). Burn the image into a dvd with a free program called imageburn. Once done, put the cd in the DVD player and turn off and on the computer. Press the delete command as soon as the pc turns on and then modify the BIOS settings to boot from the CD. reboot the computer and install Ubuntu desktop. Once performed the updates go to http://www.winehq.org/download/ e download Wine for Ubuntu.

Et voila' from that moment users will be able to run Windows programs that have an executable file. In the specific example of Office, you need to have an installation CD of the problem and the regular licensing to activate the program. Creating a safe Linux framework around windows programs minimizes downtimes of your computers and enhances your productivity. In addition, since Ubuntu is a lightweight operating system, users computers will gain speed and will not need any type of antivirus since Linux is immune from malware. Wine does not only makes us happy when we drink it, but offers Linux and Windows users the chance to work in a safe computing environment that does not know what a virus is.
