Bronxville on a Budget: Lunch Is A Verb

My first day in Bronxville, six years ago, I was walking down Pondfield and taking in the view – sidewalk  tables fitted with white tablecloths and wine glasses, women with sunglasses as large as their heels were high, perfectly manicured flower pots hanging from streetlights – and I knew. In this town, lunch is a verb.  

During the summer, when the students are away, I often find myself lunching in town. I love the fast paced pressure of ordering a sandwich at Lange’s. (You better read that menu before you get in line, or there will be consequences). I’ve dug, fork-first, into the avocado salad pizza at . Yum! I sometimes even stare longingly out the window and dream of that delectible cobb salad at the dearly departed Village Café (tear).

But, for a girl on a budget, no lunch does me better than a Bento Box from . Seriously, look at these things. They’re enormous. For only nine dollars (nine fifty, if you choose scallops like me) you get an entrée, rice, salad with carrot dressing, pork dumplings, California rolls, and a choice of soup. It is an insane amount of food. If you’re not a human garbage disposal (again, like me), you could even save some for tomorrow and get two meals in one. I've never tried this, but I've seen it done.

Here I am, Wednesday, with my colleagues, Carolyn, Josh, and Jason, enjoying everything that is wonderful about Wild Ginger at lunchtime. Jason had General Tso’s Chicken, Josh had Chicken with Broccoli Soy Ginger Sauce, and I had Scallops with Black Bean Sauce. Carolyn (the rebel) got the Sushi Roll Lunch Special, which is still a great deal at $12.50. After all, lunch may be a verb around here, but budget can be too.
