Bronxville on a Budget - Market Day

A trip to the Bronxville Farmers Market doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg.

Thanks to the miraculous cooling affects of this week’s thunderstorms (thank you weather gods), today was finally nice enough to walk to the Bronxville Farmers Market.

The danger of the Bronxville market, like many smaller markets, is that it’s chock full of prepared items, like soap, cheese, wine, baked goods — all the luxury stuff that can make a trip to the farmers market uber-pricey. Now, I love a hand made bar of soap as much as the next girl, but today I had a budget and a mission. I only took two shopping bags and $40 to keep myself on track.

Having purchased some great meats at the Prigel Family Creamery in Maryland last weekend, I was in desperate need of veggies to go with them. I headed straight back to the Morgiewicz Produce stand to pick up onions, garlic, cabbage, beets, kale, and cucumbers. Grand total: $12. I was off to a good start, so I decided to reward myself with a loaf of whole wheat farm bread from Rockhill Bakehouse.

When I got to The Orchards of Conklin booth with $22 left in my pocket, I knew what I had to do. I blew the lot on tomatoes and peaches. I’ll spend the rest of the weekend canning them, and I can enjoy local summer produce all winter long.

All right, if you must know, I also broke down and bought a tiny strawberry pie at the Conklin booth. I ate it as soon as I got home with a giant cup of coffee. After all, I’m going to need loads of energy to do all this canning and cooking!
