Bronxville Then and Now: The Reformed Church of Bronxville

Established in 1850 on a plot of land at the corner of Midland Avenue and Pondfield Road,  got its humble beginnings in a small wood-framed building.

It wasn’t until 1926 that the church would undergo its first expansion, bringing the building and cloister to its present-day size.

Then, in 1955, the church underwent another expansion project, which added a nursery school as well as accommodations for a larger organ, a chapel, an usher’s room adjacent to the Narthex, a new social hall building, a glass enclosure for the cloister and a parking area.

In the archive photo (right), one can see how modest a structure the original church was, and the large and mostly empty property that surrounded it at the time, untouched and awaiting its eventual development.

Another interesting fact about the Church’s original structure is that its belfry or “tower” remained empty until Sunday School children could raise enough money to purchase a bell tower, which did not occur until 1872, 22 years after its completion.
