This 6-week painting course explores how memory can shape our depiction of interior spaces.
You will develop paintings based on a personally meaningful place, (a childhood home, a former kitchen, classroom, or another remembered interior) using a combination of memory, written descriptions, and inspired reference images.
Emphasis will be placed on translating sensory memory into color, light, and spatial composition. Through a process that includes drawing exercises, image gathering, color studies, and multiple painting iterations, participants will create a series of works on canvas paper. Alongside studio practice, students will engage with weekly readings or interviews featuring artists who work from a combination of memory and reference imagery.
This course will include: short demonstrations on painting techniques, guided drawing and painting exercises, individual feedback during studio time, Group discussions and informal critiques. The instructor will also assign one piece of material (i.e. Artists Interview Podcast Episode, Video, Short Reading) as weekly homework.
Some artists you will discuss (browse books from, listen to interviews with) are: Salman Toor, Luc Tuymans, Milton Avery, Mamma Anderson, Howard Hodgkin.
Student Expectations:
- Bring personal reference materials (photographs, sketches, written memories, found images).
- Complete weekly assignments (reading, watching videos, writing, or image collection).
- Engage in group critiques with openness and respect.
