Chapel School Student Raises Awareness of Endangered Animals

Bronxville, NY- A summer project for one first grader spurs a passion for endangered animals. The Chapel School has a made it a priority to teach it’s students the importance of helping others. Throughout the year, students engage in community service projects. Each year The Chapel School supports a number of worthwhile organizations through our chapel offerings and service learning projects. One second grader decided to extend her lessons on service learning throughout the summer. She sold cookies and lemonade and decided that any money she raised was going to be given to charity.

The Chapel School collects offerings during their weekly Chapel Service and donate the collections to ECAP (Eastchester Community Action Program); a local agency in Tuckahoe providing food and other essentials to local families in need, Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen; and Furniture Sharehouse (Westchester) which provides free furniture to economically disadvantaged individuals and families living in Westchester County, giving them the basic household furnishings that enable them to rebuild their lives and live with dignity. These instances of giving back inspired Katie to set up her lemonade stand. Katie discussed the various option of where to donate the money and decided to donate it to the school library.

During first grade, she worked on a project about Endangered Animals and developed a deep love and passion of the subject. She was given a book about endangered animals that initially sparked her interest. A staff member stated, “We want to foster a love of learning, exploring, and excitement about the world.”

Katie decided to donate it to The Chapel School Library so that books about Endangered Animals could be purchased and more children can read about these animals and also consider helping them. Katie and The Chapel School librarian Mrs. Sharon Peterson chose a few books and they were recently added to the library. On Friday November 20th , Katie presented her story and a poster board to her classmates. “I want other people to know about these animals and hopefully we can stop them from becoming extinct.”
