Coronavirus: Tuckahoe Schools To Close For 2 Weeks
The district's schools fall within the New Rochelle containment area established to help keep the new coronavirus from spreading.
TUCKAHOE, NY — The new coronavirus container area established in New Rochelle Tuesday by the state of New York will affects schools in the Tuckahoe Union Free School District. An announcement on the district's website said school officials have been contacted by Gov. Andrew Cuomo's office and were advised that schools will need to close from March 12 through March 25.
The schools fall within the 1-mile radius of Young Israel of New Rochelle, the synagogue at the center of the COVID-19 outbreak.
Interim Superintendent of Schools Amy Goodman said the district is working quickly to pull together details and will be releasing more information Wednesday.

"In the meantime, please know that schools will be open March 11, however, all large scale events including the Cottle Science Fair, and after-school activities including TASC and sports will be canceled tomorrow," she said.

The district's teachers have been preparing e-learning in the eventuality that something such as this occurred, Goodman said.
There have been no confirmed cases of the new coronavirus in the Tuckahoe school district.
The three schools in the district are William E. Cottle School, Tuckahoe Middle School and Tuckahoe High School.
There are now 173 confirmed cases of the virus in New York — up 31 from Monday — and the cluster of cases in New Rochelle is the largest in the country, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday at a news conference.
The breakdown of coronavirus cases across New York is:
- Westchester: 108 (10 new)
- New York City: 36 (17 new)
- Nassau: 19 (2 new)
- Rockland: 6 (2 new)
- Saratoga: 2
- Suffolk: 1
- Ulster: 1
There have been about 116,000 cases of the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, confirmed globally across more than 100 countries and regions, including more than 700 in the United States, according to Johns Hopkins University. The virus has killed about 4,100 people worldwide as the death toll in the United States climbed to 27.
