Eastchester Students Shine at Arts Festival

The showcase highlights all student work in the Eastchester School District.

Every year, the Eastchester School District showcases the work of student-artists during its Annual Arts Festival.

In it's 27th year, the festival highlights all the accomplishments of K-12 students. This year’s weeklong celebration ends today.

"The arts in Eastchester have really been valued and help students foster creativity," stated Gina Zohar, art teacher for both Waverly and Anne Hutchinson Elementary Schools. "We have an amazing art program. I think from the work here, you can see how students develop across grade levels.”

Each year the Eastchester High School gym is transformed into a wonderful gallery display of various types of artwork: paintings, drawings, book art, sculpture and photography.

Beside the exhibition, the festival exposes the community to music, dance, and film. There are several ensemble performances, spring concerts, jazz performances, as well as the high school film festival.

The school also honors the achievements of its budding artists each year when a group of students are inducted into the National Art Honor Society. Each of these students has a kiosk tower to display his or her body of work, which are aligned with the College Board's cohesive theme requirements. Shaun O' Hanlon was one of the honorees this year.

"I actually got the idea when I went for a walk. I was looking at the trees and I thought about intertwining body parts in, so I decided on morphing. The idea is just the relationship between nature, technology and man-made things. The pieces begin harmonious and towards the end there is a darker apocalyptic feel to it."
