Election Of Bronxville School Board Trustee On The Ballot

Eight individuals have applied to be placed on the ballot for election to the Bronxville School Board.

The Bronxville Committee for Non-Partisan Nomination and Election of School Trustees (NPC) has announced the names of eight individuals who have applied to be placed on the ballot for election to the NPC. 

There is one three-year term up for election in each of Bronxville’s election districts.  All terms begin Jan.1, 2012.

The election is conducted via a mail-in ballot.  Ballots will be mailed to residents of each election district in mid November and must be returned by mail and received by the NPC by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec.6.  Everyone who is at least 18 years of age and who has been a resident of the Village for at least 30 days prior to the election, regardless of U.S. citizenship, is entitled to vote.

Votes will be counted under the supervision of the League of Women Voters at a meeting scheduled for Dec. 6 and election results should be available the following day.

The NPC was formed in 1936 to foster the election of Trustees of the Bronxville School on a non-partisan basis.  The NPC, which consists of three elected representatives from each of Bronxville’s seven election districts, solicits qualified residents who are interested in serving as School Trustee, and nominates a slate of candidates to run in the school-district election each May.

The candidates seeking membership on the NPC are:

District 16       Kathleen A. Knox

District 17       Won Giuriceo, Peter von Maur

District 18       Carlos Lamadrid

District 19       Michael A. Gaffney

District 20       Chris Granger

District 21       Joan Gasior

District 22       Mark Vollmer

A brief biography and statement from each candidate is included below and will also be available on the Bronxville School website at bronxville.k12.ny.us.

District 16      Kathleen Knox

Kathleen Knox and her husband, John, have lived in Bronxville since 2000 and previously lived in the Bronxville P.O. for 12 years.  They have one child in the Bronxville Middle School and one in the Bronxville High School.  

Mrs. Knox has been involved with the , and is active in Women on Wall Street and the National Organization of Investment Professionals.

“I would like to give back in some way as the Bronxville School has served both of my children well," said Knox.

"In a town like ours where the school is the lifeblood, I understand the importance of perpetuating the tradition of excellence.  As a long time Bronxville resident, I believe I have the right perspective combined with a strong desire to recruit, vet, and select the proper type of board members to carry out the school’s vision,” she continued.

Knox has spent her entire 27 year career in the investment industry. 

She earned a B.A. in Economics from Denison University.

District 17      Won Giuriceo

Won Giuriceo and her husband, Ken, have lived in Bronxville since 2008, and had previously lived in East Hanover, New Jersey and New York City.  They have two children in the and one child at the Reformed Church Nursery School

“The education and welfare of our three children is my priority," stated Giuriceo.

"I think the NPC offers a excellent opportunity to learn, first hand, about the Board and the environment in which it operates and most importantly, the NPC provides me the opportunity to directly contribute to the Bronxville school system in a meaningful way," she continued. 

"I come with no agenda other than a strong desire for the Bronxville schools to continue to operate at the highest level of excellence.  I value discretion and believe myself to be a good judge of character.  If elected, the NPC is where I have chosen to focus my energies and thus have the time and desire to be fully devoted to this committee,” added Giuriceo.

Giuriceo is a Certified Public Accountant in New York and New Jersey. 

She received a B.S. in Accounting from Boston College.

District 17      Peter von Maur

Peter von Maur and his wife, Thalia, have been Bronxville residents since 1992, having previously lived in New York City.  They have one child who graduated from the Bronxville School and one child in the . 

“Having managed two children though the Bronxville School, I have what I believe to be a good perspective on what makes the education at Bronxville so enriching and unique," stated Maur who continued that, "I am interested in helping preserve the educational experience for future generations.”

Maur is a practicing attorney in the financial services industry.  He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Society of Compliance Professionals.  He also teaches a course in New York Law School’s LLM Program as an adjunct professor. 

Maur has a B.A. in Accounting from Franklin and Marshall College and a J.D. from the New York Law School..

District 18      Carlos Lamadrid      

Chris Lamadrid and his wife, Heather, have been residents of Bronxville since 1996 and had previously lived in New York City.  They have two children, both of whom are currently in the . 

“As a 15 year resident of Bronxville and very involved with the community I feel I have a very good understanding of the school and community," stated Lamadrid who continued that, "in addition, I work in an industry that hires many young people which gives me a unique view into what skill sets are needed in a fast-paced technology-driven world.”

Lamadrid is an executive in the Media industry, having been responsible for all aspects of the Media business including Marketing, Sales, Management, etc. 

Lamadrid received a B.S. in Business/Advertising from the University of Oregon and has gone through the Executive Program at Harvard University.

District 19      Michael A. Gaffney

Michael Gaffney and his wife, Sonya, have been residents of Bronxville since 2004, having lived in New York City for the previous 12 years.  They have two children in the Bronxville School, one each in the elementary and middle schools.

“The NPC is a vital part of the success of our community and I would like to be a part of helping seek the best people possible to lead our schools,” siad Gaffney.

Gaffney earned a B.S. in Finance from the Arizona State University.

District 20      Chris Granger

Chris Granger and his wife, Jen, have been residents of Bronxville since 2007.  They had previously lived in New York City.  They have two children, one in the Bronxville Elementary School and one in the .

“The School anchors our community," said Granger.

"It is why we live here.  It is the cause that unites us.  Nothing is more important than challenging the minds and imaginations of our children, and the Bronxville School does just that.  I would love the chance to play a role in helping shape the future of the school through the Non-Partisan Committee," he said

"With two daughters set to enjoy the school system for the next 10+ years, I cannot imagine a better use of my time.  The children and parents of Bronxville deserve a world class school, with great teachers, cutting edge curriculum, and high levels of parental activism.  I would work tirelessly to help facilitate all of those ends,” he continued,

Granger is an Executive Vice President of Team Marketing & Business Operations with the National Basketball Association.  

He holds a B.S. degree in Business Management from Cornell University and an M.B.A. from Yale University.

District 21      Joan Gasior

Joan Gasior has lived in Bronxville since 2007, having previously lived in New York City, Italy, England and France.  She has two children in the Bronxville Middle School.

“In having two children in the Bronxville Middle School, I would like to serve on the NPC in order to become more familiar with how the school district is managed," said Gasior who continued that, "I want to play an active role in the Bronxville community, and I believe that, with my background and experience, I would be an effective member.”

Gasior has worked as attorney for more than 20 years negotiating disputes, performing dispositions and appearing in state and federal courts.

Gasior has a B.A. from New York Unviersity and a J.D. from Brooklyn Law School.

District 22      Mark A. Vollmer

Mark Vollmer and his wife, Ruth, have lived in Bronxville since 1999, having previously lived in New York City.  They have one child in the Bronxville Middle School.  

“I would like to contribute to the Bronxville community; to help select the most qualified candidates for Trustees; to help maintain the excellence of the Bronxville School; and to represent the interests of the local residents in my area,” stated Vollmer

Vollmer is the Chief Appraiser for AIG Real Estate and serves as an adjunct professor at the NYU Schacht Institute.  He serves as a guest lecturer at CUNY, Cornell University, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, and the Appraisal Institute. 

Vollmer received a B.A. from Haverford College and an M.B.A. from New York University.
