Futuristic Jazz Concert, Sunday, December 7, 2014, 5 pm

This jazz concert celebrates the centennial of the birth of Sun Ra, the trailblazing band leader who fused jazz with New Age spirituality.

First Baptist Church of White Plains will host a concert by the Sound of Joy Sextet, featuring fun and futuristic jazz. The group’s far-ranging improvised music could include everything from standards to sing-alongs, with funky grooves and complex rhythms conjuring a wide range of moods and intensities. The concert celebrates the centennial of the birth of Sun Ra, the trailblazing band leader who fused jazz with science fiction, Egyptology and New Age spirituality. The Sound of Joy Sextet includes Devin Gray (drums), John Murchison (bass), David Robbins (baritone sax), Josh Rutner (multi-instrumentalist), Jesse Stacken (keyboards) and Justin Wood (alto sax, flute). $15 suggested donation. Free parking. Reception follows concert.
