Leewood Drive Exit on BRP to be Closed for Metro-North Work

For an anticipated five weekends, drivers will have to use a posted detour.

Regularly take the Leewood Drive exit off the Bronx River Parkway to get to Eastchester? Well, beginning soon, you'll need to use an alternate route on some weekends.

Although the official start date has not been set, Metro North expects to begin work above the tunnel at some point in August or September, resulting in a closure of the exit for five weekends.

According to spokesperson Marjorie Anders, Metro North will be installing precast concrete ballast retainers.

"This improvement will provide support to the underpass' embankments and wing walls," she said in an email.

The exit is expected to be closed from Friday nights through Sunday afternoons, Anders said. However, she noted that the closures might not occur over five weekends in a row, since work is dependent upon track availability. Also, there should be no disruption in train service during that time.

As for those needing to get to the area, the detour should direct drivers to use the Harney Road exit in Scarsdale instead.

According to Anders, the project is budgeted at $500,000 and both the State Department of Transportation and the Westchester County Department of Transportation went through and issued permits for the work.

Permission was also given from the Eastchester Highway Department to install the signs—which are currently covered—along Leewood Drive, she said.
