Over 100 College Acceptances for Tuckahoe HS Seniors

Among the top schools: Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, Fordham, Northwestern University and University of Virginia.

Not long after Hollywood starlets took their annual Oscar stroll in March, more than 100 colleges and universities throughout the country unfurled their red carpets to the senior class at Tuckahoe High School.

"Most of our students received two or more acceptances because we really work with them to make a realistic list of schools," School Counselor Lisa Kahan said of the 550 college applications Tuckahoe processed over the past few months. "We do a lot of preparation."

On average, she said, Tuckahoe students applied to anywhere from six to eight schools, though in some cases that number rose as high as 18. A total of 104 institutions responded by offering one or more of the 67 senior Tigers a spot in their 2010-11 freshman class.

Among the top schools to open their doors are Boston College, College of the Holy Cross, Fordham, Northwestern University, Penn State, Rensselear Polytechnic Institute, University of Miami, University of Rochester, and University of Virginia.

Kahan reported no noteworthy shift in the number of waitlisted students or scholarship recipients. Nor has she seen a direct correlation between where students apply and the current economic concerns.

"I haven't seen the economy effect where students apply because usually our students will apply anyway and see what the colleges come back with, in terms of financial packages and scholarships," she said.

However, the school counselor did identify an apparent increase in students enrolling in state rather than private schools over the last few years.

"More than a few students have chosen to go to a state school rather than a private school because it's more affordable," she said.

All in all, Kahan complimented the students on their professional handling of the college crunch, which for Tuckahoe High begins in the fall of junior year.

"Our students handled the process really well. We work to prepare them early on," she said. "We have a college fair. We have junior parent information nights and senior information nights, as well as individual meetings for junior conferences and senior conferences."

"Only a handful" of seniors were still undecided at press time, and a complete list of where students are headed will be posted by Bronxville-Eastchester Patch as it becomes available.
