Return of the Lunch Bunch at The Chapel School
Bronxville, NY- “I was waiting all summer for this,” one student exclaimed. “Me too! I am so excited,” stated another. “This is going to be so much fun!” Were these students talking about the latest electronic device? No. If you walk past office of The Chapel School’s Guidance counselor, Mrs. Cathy Price, anytime during lunch you are sure to be greeted with giggles and enthusiastic students. “Lunch Bunches” are a relaxed time for conversation, playing games, and getting to know each other. The students share about their day, and new friendships are formed. “I enjoy the lunch bunches as much as the students do,” stated Mrs. Price.

The goal of The Chapel Guidance Program is to support the academic, social/emotional and career development of the students. Guidance counselor Mrs. Cathy Price visits each classroom twice a month for lessons which gives her the opportunity to get to know all of the students at The Chapel School. Her classroom lessons focus on different areas of social/ emotional development including: friendship skills; self-control; respecting others/appreciating differences; responsibility; effective communication; bullying; managing emotions; and the importance of kindness. Lessons are delivered using Smartboard presentations, age appropriate books, short videos, hands-on activities, and plenty of classroom discussions.
In the lower elementary classes, she plans to incorporate Kimochis into her lessons. These are a group of animal characters (plush toys) and little pillows with faces representing different emotions. Last year, the Kimochis were a favorite of the students and very effective in helping them to recognize that everyone has strengths and weaknesses.
