Roofers, Painters, Boilermakers Recruit Apprentices

In all, the three unions are looking to fill 75 new apprenticeships from the Hudson Valley, including Bronxville.

Three regional unions start recruiting new apprentices this spring.

  • The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for Boilermakers Northeast Area, Local Union #5, will conduct a recruitment from April 18, 2016, through March 20, 2017, for five boilermaker (construction) apprentices.
  • The Finishing Trades Institute of New York will conduct a recruitment from April 25 through May 6, 2016, for 50 painter and decorator (structural steel - bridges) apprentices.
  • The Joint Apprenticeship Committee for Roofers, Waterproofers, and Allied Workers Local Union #8 will conduct a recruitment from May 2 through May 13, 2016, for 20 roofer apprentices.

The five openings listed for boilermaker apprentices represent the total number for two recruitment regions—the New York City and Hudson Valley regions.

Residents of Westchester, Rockland, Sullivan, Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, and Putnam as well as the counties of New York, Kings, Queens, Bronx, Richmond and the portion of Hudson County east of the Hackensack River in New Jersey are eligible for the 20 roofers' apprenticeships.

The 50 openings listed for painters union apprentices represent the total number for three recruitment regions – the Hudson Valley, Long Island, and New York City regions.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
