In conjunction with its exhibition, Kuba Textiles: Geometry in Form, Space, and Time, the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase College will present the “Stories from the Congo Film Series.” Film screenings are free with museum admission.

Sit in on a private (class-time) screening of director Raoul Peck’s fast-paced, powerful story of the short tenure of Patrice Lumumba, the first legally-elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, his rise to power, subsequent assassination, and the commercial and political interests of the international and domestic powers that led to his demise.
Stay after the screening for a discussion with the students of “Cinema and the Archive,” led by professor Paula Halperin. Offered in collaboration with Purchase College’s School of the Humanities.

Raoul Peck’s 1991 documentary Lumumba, la mort d’un prophète, a compelling and much-admired documentary about Patrice Lumumba, the Congolese independence leader and first democratically-elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Congo: White King, Red Rubber, Black Death (2004, 90 minutes)
A documentary film using documents, reenactments and interviews with historians to chronicle the brutal colonial reign of King Leopold II of Belgium over the people of Congo, and reveal a cover-up of monumental proportions.

Congo in Four Acts (2010, 69 minutes)
Initiated as an project to help young DRC filmmakers develop their craft, Congo in Four Acts is a quartet of short films: Ladies in Waiting chronicles the administrative dysfunctions of a maternity ward; Symphony Kinshasa is a hard-hitting tour through Congo’s capitol city, revealing its imploding infrastructure; Zero Tolerance investigates the endemic use of rape as a weapon of war in Congo, and the anger it instigates in affected communities; and After the Mine tells very personal stories of the residents of Kipushi, a town in the shadow of a toxic mining fallout.

The museum is located on the Purchase College campus, 735 Anderson Hill Road, Purchase, NY. Once on campus, make the first left, then follow the road for a mile to Parking Lot #W–1 on the right.
