The intersection of Kraft Avenue and Cedar Street in Bronxville has long been sited by residents as a dangerous one. Indeed, the factors contributing to this view are many—significant pedestrian traffic when masses at St. Joe's are beginning or ending and a steep hill just south of the church on Kraft obstructs drivers' vision. The Kraft parking lot, where exiting cars are confronted with one-way Cedar, often forces drivers to make snap decisions on which way to turn.
Of course, while it occurred some distance from the intersection itself, last year's tragic hit and run, which killed Yonkers resident Sheryl Chasin, might have been avoided if driver Bridget Gambone had been slowed or stopped by a traffic light.
The work seems almost complete. The traffic lights hang, wrapped in plastic, above the blacktop, creating an interesting sihouette on a foggy morning in front of St. Joe's.
