Backyard Blast

There are two key elements of successful fireworks photography.  First, a slow shutter speed, and second, the use of a tripod.  What happens when the second element is missing?

On Saturday night, at a Fourth of July barbeque, I faced that situation.  Although I brought along a tripod, somebody got trigger happy and started shooting off the rockets before I had a chance to set up.

Still, some of the results were beautiful.  The cross hatching in this photograph is the result of the shake from handholding the camera. It reminds me of a dandelion turned to seed (or, as my daughter calls them, "wishberry blossoms").
