Ghosts in the Machine

As protesters continue to march on Wall Street, decrying corporate influence on American life and politics, at the opposite end of the spectrum, many Tea Partiers often reference John Galt, the icon of Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged".

The real heroine of that novel, though, is Dagny Taggert, whose Taggert Transcontinental Railroad's hub is clearly modeled on Grand Central Terminal.

While the radical elements of both left and right continue to shout at each other about evil corporations and birth certificates, it occurred to me, looking down at Grand Central commuters heading home after another day of work, that most of us are just ghosts in the machine.
