Sunday Series: Empty

2,753 Chairs in Bryant Park, Facing South

Two mornings ago, a good friend posted a snapshot on Facebook that stopped me in my tracks. 

In Bryant Park, in Manhattan, 2,753 of the iconic green folding chairs had been assembled in long columns, facing south towards the World Trade Center.  The number represents those killed in New York City on September 11th.

Later that afternoon, I walked over to see it for myself.

The similarity to the long rows of headstones at Arlington or other National Cemeteries was unmistakable.  And the emotion it left - unlike the hope of newly rising towers - was just unmistakable.

It left me feeling empty.
