Tuckahoe's Finest Remember Fellow Officers

Every year on the second Saturday in May, the Tuckahoe Police Department pauses to remember fellow police officers who gave their lives to serve others.

Members of the community joined the Tuckahoe Police Department as they honored their fallen brethren at the annual memorial service on Saturday morning.

Each year the event is held on the second saturday in May, outside of Town Hall at the flagpole monument. The flagpole is engraved with the names of those who served with the department who have since died or were killed in the line of duty. The newest addition to the flagpole was Ptl. Donald E. Reid.

Saturday's service was dedicated to Reid, who served with the Tuckahoe Police Department for 21 years prior to relocating to Prince George County, Maryland, with his family. Reid died this summer after suffering a massive heart attack as he delivered supplies to fellow officers in the Prince George County Sheriff's Department this summer.

Reid's wife and two children were present at Saturday's event. Reid's children, Mike and Taylor-Rose, carried a wreath in his honor, and they were presented with an encased and folded American flag and their father's police hat in a touching tribute.

The hour-long ceremony began at 9 a.m. with a welcome by Sgt. David Bank, who coordinated the event, followed by the national anthem, sung by Jina Pearce.

After the invocation by police chaplain Rev. Carl Maiello and greetings from Tuckahoe Police Chief John Costanzo, several local officials, including Tuckahoe Mayor Steven Ecklond and Eastchester Town Supervisor Anthony Colvita, made brief remarks.

Many members of the local VFW posts in Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe were there as part of the color guard, while others came to pay their respects.
