Vin Scully Award to ESPN's Brent Musburger from Fordham's WFUV Radio

Prominent ESPN Broadcaster to be honored November 9th in New York City

Prominent ESPN and SEC Network play-by-play broadcaster Brent Musburger, one of the most recognized voices in sports television history, has been selected to be the ninth recipient of the Vin Scully Lifetime Achievement Award in Sports Broadcasting from WFUV Radio (90.7 FM/wfuv.org).

The award recognizes the iconic Scully, in his 67th and final season as “Voice of the Dodgers” and a renowned Fordham University alumnus (1949). WFUV was the launching pad to his Hall of Fame broadcast career. WFUV is the noncommercial, member-supported public media service of Fordham University for nearly 70 years.

The Scully Award will be presented on Wednesday night, November 9, at “On the Record: A Celebration of Achievement in News and Sports Broadcasting,” a benefit for WFUV, at the Costantino Room at Fordham Law School (150 W. 62nd Street, NYC). CBS News 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl will receive the Charles Osgood for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism, which acknowledges Osgood, another Fordham/WFUV alumnus who is himself stepping down this month after 22 years as the anchor of CBS Sunday Morning.

Previous Scully Award recipients include: inaugural honoree Scully (2008), Dick Enberg (2009), Ernie Harwell (2010), Pat Summerall (2011), Al Michaels (2012), Bob Costas (2013), Verne Lundquist (2014), and Mike “Doc” Emrick (2015).

Exceptional WFUV senior sports broadcaster Drew Casey (FCRH ’17) will also be among those honored. On the Record is designed to raise funds and elevate awareness with regard to WFUV’s news and sports training programs.

Said Scully: “Brent Musburger fulfills all the definitions of a great sportscaster. Extremely well prepared, accurate and interesting.”

Said Musburger: "It’s a great honor to win an award named after the greatest baseball announcer ever! I've learned so much from working with and listening to Vin Scully. Baseball won't sound as sweet without him.”

A member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame (2011), Musburger Musburger joined ABC in May 1990 after 15 years as CBS Sports’ primary host and play-by-play commentator, appearing on The NFL Today, the NCAA Final Four, tennis’ U.S. Open, the NBA and the Masters. He serves as a host and play-by-play commentator for multiple sports across ESPN and SEC Network. Musburger primarily works college football and basketball game telecasts, highlighted by SEC Network beginning in 2014 and on ESPN’s Big 12 Big Monday college basketball games since the 2009-10 season. He previously called the Little League World Series from 2000-11.
