Water Being Collected for Flint in Southern Westchester

Cases of water can be dropped off and will be taken to the Michigan city in crisis.

Westchesters residents who want to lend support to the people of Flint, MI during their water crisis can do so Saturday and Sunday.

Cases of water can be dropped off at the entrance of Trinity St. Paul Church, 311 Huguenot St. in New Rochelle, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, and 1 a.m. to 1 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 21.

The water will be collected and taken to Flint by Ron’s Trucking Corp. in Yonkers.

Dr. Jim Bostic, executive director of Nepperhan Community Center in Yonkers helped to spearhead the effort along with other faith leaders.

Since April 2014, water from the Flint River was used to supply homes and businesses. The water was not properly treated and it began leaching lead into pipes going into households.

It has been subsequently determined that the level of lead in Flint drinking water was extremely dangerous.

Councilman Jared Rice, co-chairman of My Brother’s Keeper in New Rochelle, said his organization was glad to be able to help bring clean water to Flint.

“Our hearts go out to the families of Flint, who have been denied the basic right to safe, clean water,” he said.
