Weekend Football Round-Up: Wins All Around for Local Teams

Eastchester, Tuckahoe and Bronxville all won their respective football games this weekend.

Eastchester 35, Brewster 20

On the same night that local police and fire personnel carried an American flag onto the field for a 9/11 pre-game ceremony, the football team fittingly displayed a certain level of resilience and fighting spirit, holding off a number of comeback attempts by their opponents and eventually evening their season record at 1-1.

The opponents in question Friday night where the Brewster Bears, who despite trailing for the entire contest refused to be put away for good, and much to Eastchester Head Coach Fred DiCarlo’s dismay, made the game interesting until the game’s final minutes.

Early on, however, the contest had very much the makings of a blowout, as the Eagles raced out to a 14-0 first quarter lead behind touchdown runs by senior running back Rob Carinci and junior Jack Calby. After Brewster cut into Eastchester’s lead and made the score 14-6 in the second quarter, the Eagles would respond for the first time of many on Friday, as junior quarterback Greg DiCarlo scampered 39 yards on a keeper to extend his team’s lead to 22-6.

A 63-yard screen pass then went the distance for Brewster, who once again narrowed their deficit at 22-12 and threatened to get back into the game. Relying on a methodical and effective running game, however, the Eagles again gave themselves some much needed breathing room, this time thanks to another touchdown run by Carinci, this one of 28 yards. The teams traded scores one last time in the fourth quarter, before Eastchester made some key defensive plays down the stretch to ensure a 35-20 victory and a 1-1 record so far this season.

“As a defensive coordinator, I was a little disappointed in our play,” said Coach DiCarlo after Friday’s game. “As a head coach, a win’s a win, and offensively we did a great job. We came up with a big interception at the end of first half and we came up with an interception at the end of the fourth quarter, so we did make some plays, but we also gave up the big plays. If we can minimize the big mistakes, and bend and not break, then I think that’s half the battle. We broke too much today.”

Both teams were marred by penalties – especially of the personal foul variety – as the contest proved to be far more physical than expected, even by members of the Eastchester coaching staff.

“It’s a little discipline, and that falls onto me,” DiCarlo said. “I think it was aggressive on both sides. They were much more physical than we thought. We got caught a lot, and a penalty is a penalty.”

Eastchester’s next game will be this Saturday (9/24) away at Poughkeepsie, who has won its first two games of the season so far.
