Key to Awesomeness:

On April 29 at 7 p.m., Eastchester High School will hold its 5th Annual Dancing With Our Stars, a program that features dancing, half-time shows, and even a “cupcake war,” according to the organizers, the sophomore class council e-board.

“It’s a chance for the whole community to come together to watch teachers dance with teachers, teachers dance with students, and students dance with students. It’s a lot of fun,”  says president Annie Carforo.

This year, the e-board expects a sold out event of about 700 people.

“Last year we raised about $10,000 for Gilda’s Club. All proceeds of ticket sales goes to Gilda’s Club, the sophomore class gets profits from food sales and raffles,” says vice president Abbie Orlando.

Gilda’s Club has a special meaning for treasurer Casey McMahon.

“Gilda’s Club is a support group for women that have cancer and they do activities. My grandma was a part of Gilda’s Club before she passed away,” McMahon says. “They do knitting, and raise money for cancer research. It’s a really great group that we are glad to support. It’s great because we all know someone affected by cancer.”

The event will stick to its ballroom roots, but other dance genres will be included this year, including hip-hop and jazz.  Eastchester’s own Andrea’s Dance Studio is training participants for free as part of their contribution to the event.

“We are very fortunate to have Andrea train dance participants like myself, which helps to make it a great event,” says Orlando. “Teachers and students have wonderful costumes which make the event that more special.”

Tickets for the show are $10. And for $5, you can try—and judge—three cupcakes. For more info on the event, visit the EHS website here
