Yonkers Woman Charged in Fatal Bronxville Hit and Run

The victim, a 58-year-old New Jersey resident, died at Lawrence Hospital on Thursday.

A Yonkers woman is accused of leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in a death; Bronxville police said she drove off after hitting a pedestrian while driving on Kraft Avenue in Bronxville Thursday evening.

The victim, Sheryl R. Chasin, 59, an Edgewater, NJ resident and employee of the Yonkers school district, was pronounced dead at Lawrence hospital, police said.

According to Police Chief Christopher Satriale, police responded to Kraft Avenue at 5:47 p.m. after receiving several 911 calls about a woman being hit by a car. After investigating, police said that Chasin had been crossing Kraft Avenue to go to a party at J.C. Fogarty's Tavern when a 2006 Subaru hit her.

"While crossing Kraft Avenue she was struck by a motor vehicle. Our investigation reveals that that vehicle stopped, proceeded to back up, impact Ms. Chasin a second time and then flee the scene," Satriale said at a press conference this afternoon.

A second car, a Dodge Caravan, hit Chasin seconds after the first, but stayed at the scene, according to Satriale.

Bridget Gambone, 85, was found at her Yonkers home a few hours later, according to police.  Gambone was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of an incident, which resulted in a death, a felony.

According to Satriale, Gambone was given a blood test. An interview that Satriale described as "not fruitful," was also conducted, he said.

Satriale said police believe Gambone was driving home after visiting relatives in Mount Vernon. She had a valid license and no recent convictions or reports of accidents, he said.

There was no indication that speed was a factor in the accident, according to Satriale.

Gambone was arraigned in Village Court on Friday and released on her own recognizance. She is due back in court at a later date.

No charges were filed against the driver of the second vehicle, Margaret Rich, a 52-year-old Yonkers resident.

"A festive and joyous evening to honor a colleague turned into an absolute tragedy at the absolute worst time of the year…" said Satriale, who extended his condolences to Chasin's family and the City of Yonkers.

Robert O'Neill, a Yonkers resident who worked with Chasin, was at the press conference and described her as, "a wonderful woman."

"She was just full of life, an amazing woman," he said.

O'Neill, a retired Yonkers police officer, did some work with Chasin in the school system and called her "extremely supportive and encouraging."

"It's a loss, it's a terrible loss," he said.
