2-Alarm Fire Blazes In Brooklyn Manhole On Thanksgiving: FDNY

The fire started in a manhole, spread to a car parked on top of it, and then extended into a six-story apartment building.

BROOKLYN, NY — A two-alarm fire broke out inside a manhole on a Brooklyn street on Thanksgiving morning, the New York City Fire Department said.

According to the FDNY, the fire started around noon on Thursday on Remsen Street between Henry Street and Hicks Street in Brooklyn Heights.

The fire started in a manhole, spread to a car parked on top of it, and then extended into the fourth-floor apartment of 76 Remsen St., a six-story apartment building.

More than 100 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the blaze, and got the fire under control around 1:25 p.m.

According to ABC 7 New York, several apartments on the block had to be evacuated due to elevated carbon monoxide levels as a result of the fire.

Thankfully, there were no reported injuries, the FDNY said.

Fire cause and origin is under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals.
