Today's riddle: How do billboards talk? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Brooklyn Alternate-Side Parking Rules Revert After Pilot Leaves Streets Dirtier (patch.com) — Drivers in Prospect Heights and Crown Heights will see full alternate-side parking rules return after a summer pilot that relaxed enforcement left streets dirtier and violations higher. City Council Member Crystal Hudson requested the test, but sanitation data showed compliance dropped and cleaning suffered, prompting the city to end the experiment and restore the usual twice-weekly street-sweeping schedule on affected Brooklyn blocks.
2. Brooklyn Conservatory of Music opens new campus to expand music therapy and arts access • Brooklyn Paper (brooklynpaper.com) — A major new Brooklyn Conservatory of Music campus has opened near Grand Army Plaza, doubling the organization's capacity and officially housing its expanded Music Therapy Institute. Local elected officials and donors celebrated the $17.8 million, fully accessible space, which will broaden music therapy and arts education services for thousands of Brooklyn residents and beyond, with a strong focus on mental health, inclusion, and workforce training.
3. Forgotten Brooklyn waterfront lot is getting a $40 million transformation (latination.com) — A long-neglected industrial lot on Brooklyn's Newtown Creek is finally becoming Box Street Park, a $40 million waterfront green space now under construction in Greenpoint. With new esplanades, ball courts, dog runs, and ADA-compliant paths, the park is slated to open by late summer 2028, bringing much-needed recreational space and climate-resilient landscaping to a rapidly growing neighborhood.
4. NYC Bus Cameras Could Cost You $250 (patch.com) — Brooklyn drivers using the B1 or B6 bus corridors should prepare for new automated cameras that will start issuing fines up to $250 for blocking bus lanes, stops, or double-parking after a 60-day warning period. The MTA says the expanded enforcement, already improving bus speeds citywide, aims to keep routes moving and make boarding safer, especially for riders with disabilities.
5. Who's watching? Civil rights groups seek answers about NYPD's use of Flock Safety • Brooklyn Paper (brooklynpaper.com) — A Brooklyn-based civil rights group is pressing the NYPD to reveal how city officers used Flock Safety's license plate reader database, after uncovering more than 1,700 largely unexplained searches. Advocates say vague records make it impossible to know whether Brooklyn drivers were appropriately targeted or swept into unnecessary surveillance, while the NYPD insists it has no contract with Flock and used only limited trial access.
