BROOKLYN, NY — The family of Gregory Delpeche, one of the bystanders who was shot by police while they were firing at another man at a train station in Brownsville, said that he has brain damage, according to NY1.

Police told Patch they shot Delpeche, 49, in the head while firing at another man who they say lunged at them with a knife on Sunday night at the Sutter Avenue L train station in Brownsville.

The incident started when police officers pursued Derrell Mickles, 37, up three flights of stairs for skipping the subway fare, the police said. At the top of the stairs, Mickles threatened them with a knife, saying, "I'm going to kill you if you don't stop following me," according to NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.

Police responded with Tasers, but those were ineffective, and then the police opened fire on Mickles, hitting three others — two civilians and a police officer — in the process, police officials said.

According to NY1, Delpeche was on his way to work when he was shot in the head. His loved ones joined his attorneys at Brownsville Playground on Wednesday to demand that the officers who shot at him be suspended, NY1 reported.

They also demanded to see the body camera footage of the incident and launch an investigation, NY1 reported.

As of Wednesday, both Delpeche and Mickles are in critical condition. The other two people who were hit — a 26-year-old woman and a police officer — are expected to recover.
