Here are the top stories today in Brooklyn:
1. Gunfire and a slashing caused panic yesterday morning at NYU's campus in Downtown Brooklyn. A group of teens outside the MetroTech Center near Bridge Street were spooked around 11 a.m. when they heard gunshots. NYU sent out a public alert, telling folks in the vicinity to "run, hide, or fight" while warning others to stay away from the scene. A few blocks down from where the shell casings were found, a 15-year-old boy was slashed across the face just moments later. No one was hit by gunfire. Students, as well as the public, expressed concern about NYU Security's vague message and lack of protection.
2. One of the largest mass exonerations in U.S. history, announced by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, is now under investigation. On Sept. 7, Gonzalez requested that Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Matthew D'Emic dismiss 331 misdemeanor convictions and 47 felony convictions, on the grounds that the Conviction Review Unit (CRU) did not find evidence of misconduct in the cases and hoped to dismiss — it must be noted that all 378 convictions were based primarily on the testimony of a mere 13 NYPD officers, all of whom had committed serious misconducts themselves and whose integrity therefore could not be taken as primary evidence. New York law firm Hach & Rose, LLP is currently investigating allegations of civil rights abuses in connection with this matter.
3. A local Flatbush salon is bringing awareness to human trafficking, after the owner heard one of her customers describe her own daughter's experience with the exploitative practice. Shocked at how easily young girls, like her customer's daughter, can get caught up in the trafficking trade, owner of Vedette Beauty & Skincare decided to host an event to raise awareness for the cause. Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said that one of the best ways to prevent trafficking is education because reporting relies heavily on community members. Here is just one eye-opening statistic: "According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, over 63,000 trafficking cases were reported between 2007 and 2019. Of those cases, more than 2,900 took place in New York. The average age of a human sex trafficking victim is 13 years old."
This Friday, Oct. 7, Vedette Beauty & Skincare is partnering with Brooklyn District Attorney's Office to host Strength & Beauty, a wellness day celebration honoring survivors of human sex trafficking with free makeovers while educating the public on preventive measures. Learn more at the link.
