🌱 Cyclists Making Masterpieces + A Struggle to Support Asylum Seekers

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Brooklyn.

(Patch Media)

Hi all. Here's the Daily to get your Sunday started with things going on in Brooklyn, including:

  • GPS Art 🚴‍♀️🎨
  • Some political updates
  • Sunday inspiration 💛

But first, today's weather:

⛈ An afternoon thunderstorm. High: 76 Low: 61.

Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:

1. A Brooklyn cyclist recreates a 357-year-old piece of art on her bike. Wielding the power of her fitness app, Janine Strong used a smart-tracking feature to recreate Johannes Vermeer's 1665 "Girl with a Pearl Earring" over 50 miles of Brooklyn streets. Strong has kickstarted a trend known as "GPS Art," opting for imagery creation over standard loops when planning out her cycling routes. But Strong is not the first to make masterpieces with her GPS, in fact folks have been committed to the practice for quite some time, using a variety of geo-mapping applications to create detailed mapping art.

The New York Times

2. A New York judge ruled against COVID vaccine mandate for NYPD union members. Over 1,000 NYC employees have been fired for not getting vaccinated against COVID-19, but a New York judge recently deemed the mandante for members of the New York Police Department invalid. The court affirmed that at the time the mandate was made, it was not inappropriate. However, now that COVID-related hospitalizations are down in NYC, the court decided that vaccines were an "improper infringement" on employees and wrongful grounds for termination.

Fox News

3. Brooklyn officials seek help from Governor Hochul to assist the wave of asylum seekers coming to New York. Record numbers of asylum seekers are arriving by bus into the city everyday—Mayor Adams has considered offshore cruise ships as a temporary housing antidote, and others are brainstorming how to best aide these individuals and families. However, the situation is becoming increasing more dire every day. Masbia Soup Kitchen in Brooklyn has provided for thousands of families with meals and support, but they are struggling to support the increasing number of people who need it. With NYC reporting 13,000 people seeking asylum (10,000 of which have entered the shelter system), community leaders and government officials are urging Gov. Hochul to provide more state funding to the support effort.

News 12 New Jersey

4. The Brooklyn Democratic Party pays sex offender as a consultant. Steve Richman, an ex-NYC lawyer accused of sexually harassing his subordinates, is being paid by the Brooklyn Democratic Party as an election consultant. Richman, who resigned as the City's Board of Election's top lawyer amidst sexual harassment allegations, was photographed at the Democratic party's bi-annual committee meeting on Coney Island on Wednesday. However, Richman has allegedly been working for the party for months: On June 2 he was paid $2,395 for "professional services," the same day he pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor . . . yikes.
