Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. Greenery is hard to come by in Bushwick, and a turf war has begun about who should get to use the limited space: dogs or kids? Bushwick's Green Central Knoll is a baseball field that's been around for decades. For a long time it was strictly for private use by permit-holders until the fences came down for renovations and the public swarmed in on the urban oasis. Ever since Knoll became accessible dog owners have been using the park as a dog run, which has left the field in pretty bad shape: poop in the outfield, holes just waiting to roll an ankle, you get the picture. NYC Parks Department recently padlocked the field—essentially returning Knoll to the privatized space it always was—and dog owners are not happy about it. Now, Bushwick residents are in arms about how the field should be used, as there is very little green space to go around. The debate is underscored by tensions surrounding the rapid gentrification of the neighborhood; more expensive real estate has brought a lot more dog-owners to the area. Who should suffer, residents argue, dogs or kids?

2. Signature Auto Group is helping folks get out of their car leases amidst turbulent auto market conditions. 2022 is not an inviting time to be in the market for a new car lease; an automotive chip shortage is expected to last through 2026, and skyrocketing demand for new cars greatly outweighs inventory supply at the moment. The Brooklyn-based Signature Auto Group its trying to do some of the dirty work for its customers, and help them get out of and/or start new leases. All of their services are available online.
3. A new affordable housing tower just opened up in DUMBO. Work is complete on the 30-story residential building at 90 Sands St. Designed by Beyer Blinder Belle and developed by Breaking Ground, the project involved the redevelopment of the former Jehovah’s Witness Hotel and yields 491 units with a portion devoted to deeply affordable housing and supportive housing for the formerly homeless. The building also has a 28,000-square-foot community facility and commercial space spanning the first and second floors and a public plaza at the corner of Sands and Jay Streets.
