Here are the top stories in Brooklyn today:
1. The future of the Domino Sugar Refinery is finally starting to take shape in Williamsburg. The massive brick monolith sitting on the edge of the East River used to serve 60 percent of the sugar that Americans consumed. Now, more than 100 years later, a sweeping redevelopment headed by Two Trees is transforming the historic building into a multi-use high-rise for offices, retail, housing, and open space. For several years after it was shut down in 2000 the sugar refinery remained vacant while its initial buyer, the Community Preservation Corporation, finalized its development plans to turn the bootstrap building into a collection of glass-and-steel luxury high-rises. Protestors, however, pushed back against such a historically working class building and area being used in favor of housing for the rich. Now, the Two Trees plan for Domino focuses on adaptive reuse and open space, with a campus where public plazas, offices and retail shops are stitched in with luxury housing along more than half a mile of waterfront. The Two Trees plan also incorporates 700 affordable housing units, a large public park, and is operating under a model of sustainable development. Read more at the link below.

2. An NYPD detective used his investigative skills for naught and was recently accused of stalking his ex-girlfriend. Detective Douglas Connolly, 36, stands accused of using department databases to look up information about his ex-girlfriend, police said. The NYPD officer was arresting in Brooklyn on Saturday and charged with stalking and computer trespassing.
3. New surveillance video footage shows fake Con Ed service workers breaking and entering, stealing a wheelchair. On Monday, two thieves dressed as Con Ed workers forced their way into a Brooklyn apartment and tied up the 58-year-old woman inside while they robbed her home. According to police, the duo made off with a television, stereo, clothes, a presumed wheelchair and other items that belonged to the victim and her husband. One had a gun. The woman, how has difficulty walking, has lived in that apartment for seven years. Afraid the thieves will return, she now wants to move.
